The Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world next to Sydney Australia and is the main Sailing port in Cornwall. The harbour and estuary known as 'Carrick Roads' has a beautiful coastline with lots of creeks and inlets to explore. St Mawes is just across the estuary (pictured) and there are regular ferries to take you there and also up the river to TRURO to do what is loosely called a day trip, though that is purely dependent upon the tide. |

Falmouth became a really active port back in the 17th and 18th century when fast Post Office Packet sailing boats carried mail and expensive cargo to and from places as far away as the East Indies and Spain. Nowadays, Falmouth has a new University and the National Maritime Museum (Cornwall). The town used to be largely dependant upon tourism but is becoming an interesting and bustling entity in its own right. Now there is also a thriving Art School and Centre that has regular Shows.
